The world was right again. Everything was normal if only for a day…
2020 Fall Eibach Track Attack was hosted at the FIRM, also known as Florida International Rally & Motorsport Park. It was my first real race/autocross event in around 15 years and it proved to be fun aside from the fact that I was unable to run solo due to missing the prerequisite “driver’s meeting” that morning. I was also missing a helmet (later learning I would need SA or M rated helmet).
The weather was dazzling and I was able to ride shotgun with a couple 240SX so I was able to experience the thrill one could only hope for at a bona fide paved race course. I was also introduced to a Puerto Rican hotdog on this day.
This event potentially lit a fire–I might want to build a track-focused car, complete with weight-reduction and part swaps/upgrades which may not exactly be street-legal. The question is whether I go crazy with a current vehicle (like my MX-5), refresh an old project car I purchase on the cheap, or even build a kit car. Not entirely sure at the moment but the appetite for fun is considerable. If I were to wait and build a kit car, I would need to sell a vehicle to replace with the utility-focused pickup truck. Then I would need to invest in a full-sized tool chest, power tools, and clear room in my garage for them.
If I stay with my MX-5, I would likely try to replace headers, catalytic converter, intake, and exhaust to try to increase airflow. I would likely need a tune. Of course, I would do some homework first. Also, this would need to be budgeted, so I would need to figure some finances out first. As well, the RX-7 dream has not gone anywhere. Maybe I even try to track an RX-7 if I am glutton for punishment. Less than likely, but on the table. This sort of dreaming is what is so much fun.
Here are a couple of my favorite builds I witnessed this weekend, which really helped motivate…
It looks like another event is lining up for end of January so maybe I can get in front of that one. We will see!
